The CIE iGCSE History course is, whilst being challenging and demanding, a fantastic learning experience for the students. The course supports students to develop an understanding of much of the context that the modern world finds itself. The Cambridge IGCSE History syllabus is made up of Key Questions, Focus Points and Specified Content. The students will develop their skills and knowledge based on the following Assessment Objectives (AO):
AO 1: An ability to recall, select, organise and deploy knowledge of the syllabus content.
AO 2: An ability to construct historical explanations using an understanding of:
• cause and consequence, change and continuity, similarity and difference
• the motives, emotions, intentions and beliefs of people in the past.
AO 3: An ability to understand, interpret, evaluate and use a range of sources as evidence, in their historical context.
The course takes 2 academics years and the material studied in Grade 9 and Grade 10 will form part of the final examinations in 2021. The student's development of the three AOs is examined by three papers. Paper 1 (2 hours) is based on the Core Content and the Depth Study. Paper 2 (2 hours) demonstrates the students ability to analyse and compare primary and secondary source material, based on one element of the Core Content. Paper 4 is the Alternative to Coursework paper.
A short introduction covering settlement, population, migration, and industry is taught before the iGCSE History course begins properly. This is to ensure that students have a similar level of understanding of these key concepts before encountering them in the History course.
